Free books and resources…

Hey there! I set up this page to welcome new subscribers with some free books. If you don’t know who I am, please browse around my site a bit: I mainly help people publish and market their books, or start creative online businesses quickly that make money right away. If you joined my list, I’ll send a few emails soon that will set you down the right path to creative independence (creating stuff that people want to buy, so that you don’t ever have to work again).

But I won’t annoy you every few days; I only write if I have something big going on. Sometimes I give away free vacations, free book design packages or other valuable stuff. I’ll also let you know when I develop new tools or resources to help you publish better or faster, but those take months to develop. I’m working on a couple major book projects that I think you’ll like, but I’ve also been cranking out shorter, practical guides. For now, here are some of the books I’ve written (free for you – they’re also for sale at Amazon).

This is a brief guide to the book marketing strategies I’ve used to become a full-time author in under a year. We’ll discuss paid advertising, release strategies, pricing and pre-orders, book giveaways, how to target your audience, viral exposure and press coverage, marketing hacks, and how to reach your first $1000 on Kindle. Download now.

You can also join over 4000 authors in the Guerrilla Publishing Facebook group.

Book Marketing is Dead

I recently redid Book Marketing is Dead but only put the new version on Amazon HERE.

How to Write, Format, Publish, Promote…

This is a basic crash course on self-publishing… I cover a lot of ground, and it’s free – but you should also check out this Guide to Surviving the Self-Publishing Gauntlet.

Book cover design secrets that sell more books

This is a collection of the presentations I’ve given on book design at various writing conferences – however you should also check out the free video series I’ve added to

100 Publishing Questions Answered

I asked my audience for their biggest frustrations and problems, then answered all their questions. This is kind of an encyclopedia of publishing. Hope it helps!

I want to give you as much valuable stuff as I can, so I’ll be updating this page whenever I have new resources to offer.

Here’s a WP plugin I developed for this site. It’s pretty cool. (Highlight the text on this page to see it). But the Facebook part isn’t working right anymore because Facebook updated their code so that we can’t share only a selection of text. It’s still pretty great for Twitter.

DIY Covers (make your own book covers)

One of my major projects, DIY Covers, is focused on helping authors make professional, high quality book covers without needing a designer. You may want to sign up there for a different email series that’s more focused on publishing and marketing. I’m working on some amazing new tools and an online cover creator – make sure you’re on the list if you want to make your own 3D promo graphics like these…

What else do you need help with?

Please don’t hesitate to send me an email if you’re stuck on something – setting up your WordPress site, growing your platform, publishing or marketing your book, whatever. Your questions often inspire a blog post that will help other people dealing with the same problem.

Thank you, Sir, for the excellent books.

  • Jennifer-Crystal Johnson Posted October 18, 2014 5:28 am

    Hi Derek,

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge! As an indie publisher/author/poet/editor/formatter myself (I know, the titles get to be too many to list when you wear so many hats… lol), I am ALWAYS on the lookout for more information and better ways of doing things. I’ve enjoyed your website so far and am looking forward to reading your books (although I have to finish a book cover first and it’s 10:30 at night… lol) and learning more!

I hope you’re enjoying your weekend and thanks again for sharing your knowledge! I hope to do the same myself soon on a more one-to-many basis =).

  • Luke Morris Posted November 7, 2014 5:30 pm

Awesome, Derek! Thanks so much for sharing. I’ve published nine books so far, and am working on a tenth (for NaNoWriMo), but I’ve had difficulty getting any traction or building sales. I hope you won’t be offended if I model some of my marketing strategies after yours.

  • Angela Reuss Posted November 7, 2014 7:00 pm

Thanks Derek for sharing this wealth of info! Peace, Love & Blessings!

  • TariAkpodiete Posted November 8, 2014 6:09 am

I already bought some of these, but I’m stoked to get the rest for free. Thanks!

  • Chelsie Charbonneau Posted December 6, 2014 9:13 pm

Thank you Derek! This is very beneficial and most definitely push my abilities of writing. I have been writing so much lately, but I don’t feel like I’m getting anywhere with it. All of your books would be a great start to improve and make more action into my writing. Which book do you recommend first?

  • Antara Man Posted December 9, 2014 6:16 pm

That is so awesome! I liked your book about Cover Design Secrets that Sell Books. I will read the others too.

  • Tracy Campbell Posted January 25, 2015 9:54 pm

Hi Derek, thanks so much for providing valuable content. 🙂

  • Doug New Posted February 1, 2015 10:30 am

Derek, you are without doubt, a force of nature, awakened at exactly the right time to serve our species at this most exciting moment in our evolution. More energy to you my helpful partner 🙂

    • Derek Murphy Posted February 1, 2015 9:35 pm

Thanks! Can I share your quote? Or put it on my wall to keep me inspired? 🙂

      • Doug New Posted February 1, 2015 10:04 pm

Absolutely! You’ve inspired me so let the energy flow..

  • Julie Morgan Posted June 19, 2015 12:55 am

I just downloaded your books, Derek! Thank you SO MUCH! I love being an indie, but it is not without its struggles. Thank you for what you do and keep inspiring all those around you!

  • PhysUnknown Posted November 3, 2015 7:29 pm

“Cover Design Secrets” and “Write, Format, Publish, Promote” Kindle links seem to be bad. Files will not open after download. The Cover Design epub also will not open, and there seems to be an issue with the WFPP pdf.

  • tony archstar Posted January 26, 2016 3:03 am

Thanks Derek! Can you share the book format details associated with your book

How to Write, Format, Publish, Promote… You have given me the encouragement to start!

  • Jeremy Sutton Posted May 3, 2016 8:46 pm

    Pretty incredible resources. Thank you

  • Karen Otazo Posted July 24, 2016 12:14 am

Your energy and generosity are inspiring. If I were not in the midst of creating the plot with forays into writing, I would eagerly buy your marketing approach which I love. Just not quite ready for it.
What do you recommend for plot development? A program or book?
What do you think of a pen name?

    Thanks, Karen

    • Derek Murphy Posted July 24, 2016 11:39 am

For plot development, Plot Perfect, Story Grid and Story Fix all helped me a lot.

  • Karen Otazo Posted July 24, 2016 6:13 pm

Thanks Derek; bought your book and those you recommended. Can’t wait to work with you when I’m ready!

  • Soren Summers Posted August 13, 2016 5:35 am

I’m totally bowled over by the sheer quality and amount of sound advice you provide both in your books and your blog. I’ve only just finished 100 Publishing Questions Answered and am about to work my way through the rest. Thanks tons, Derek!

  • author Robert P. Wills Posted May 16, 2017 10:23 pm

Kind of frustrating. Just updated my done-myself covers and they’re heaps better but I have no mailing list at all. Didn’t think I needed one for fantasy fiction humor (my main series). I’m getting ready to start Book 7 in the series so I think I’m waaay behind the power curve.

Hopefully you can help get me on track.

  • Tina White Posted March 15, 2018 7:34 pm

Is there anyway, I can have the workbook mailed to me? It would make it easier for me.
