I used books to launch an online business that’s made over half a million dollars over the past decade. I made a ton of mistakes, but I’m pretty smart now, and companies hire me privately for consulting. I love out-of-the-box, guerrilla marketing hacks but most of my actual work is pretty simple:
I work as an editorial publishing consultant, helping authors polish up their manuscript, and as a ghostwriter, turning their content into a successful book. I’ve charged over $50K to ghostwrite a book, and helped many authors launch bestsellers that have earned passive revenue for years. But I wanted to post a clear and simple offer, so there can be clear goals and transparency concerning what I can do for you.
$10K for 50K words is my new publishing or content writing package, and it works like this:
Ghostwriting a book
As someone with a PhD in Literature who also runs a successful online business, I’m a rare bird. Most academics and truly creative writers don’t get the business of publishing. I can not only turn your book idea into a reality – either by taking all your content and notes and turning it into a bestseller, or by dreaming up the whole concept for you that will best support your business goals. The average for ghostwriting, and what I would normally charge, is around $25K – though of course you can find cheaper, the truth is AI writing software is making it too easy to sell services. I do plan to use AI tools for research and editing, but will manually rewrite all the content to match your voice, and give it a hard-business approach and marketing strategy to guarantee it will be a passive lead generator for your business. Since this makes it easier and faster for me (but is still at least 100 hours of work), I’m charging $10K for a 50,000 word manuscript that is designed to sell, rank and support your business.
*Bonus – I’ll include a book cover, formatting and publishing support.
Optional: For $1000 I can do a manuscript review with gentle edits and pointers on your book’s marketability and potential audience.
Digital Marketing SEO
Alternatively, I can write 50 to 100 articles, that will double your website traffic and bring you new sales. We’ll start with a total platform review and fix any issues that are hurting sales or conversions; I’ll do a thorough research of your keywords and SEO, then brainstorm an article list with creative topics that will earn shares and valuable backlinks. The entire search industry is changing fast, and if your business relies on online sales at all you need to be proactive before traffic dries up.
Bonus #1 – I’ll actively build manual backlinks from high DA sites and won’t quit until I’ve aggressively doubled your traffic.
Bonus #2 – I’ll even redesign your current website with new headers, logos and website design, so you have a clean and powerful online brand.
Optional: For $2000 I can do the platform audit video, do all the research and send you the list of article ideas that will boost your traffic fast… but I guarantee no other writer will be able to execute it the way I can so that it actually works.
Small Business Book Package Deal
Want both? For $15,000, I’ll write you a bestselling book and design and implement an entire SEO strategy. My content will outperform all your marketing strategies or on-staff marketing team, and your book will position you as an expert while bringing in new leads.
I added the pricing table down below so you can see the details. Broken down, the base cost is $0.20/word – which is fairly competitive already for high quality ghostwriting or copywriting services – but I’ll be providing a ton of expert value few other writers could match. The only catch is, there’s a minimum order of 50,000 words. Since this will be a relatively long-term project, I recommend a payment plan for 2K/month for 5 months.
- ¢20per word
- Cover Design
- ¢20per month
- SEO Audit
- Content Marketing
- Digital Strategy
- Optimize Conversions
- Double Traffic
- ¢15per month
UPDATE: I’m already booked through 2024, but you can send an email and tell me more about your project, I can make time if it interests me: derekmurphy [@] creativindie.com
I’ll be honest, most people shouldn’t hire a ghostwriter or even a content writer these days – you can do it all yourself and it’s easier than it’s ever been… but only if you know what you’re doing (or you have a bunch of time to focus on building new skills).
If you already have a six or seven-figure business, and are already spending money on ads or marketing – I can probably do it better. But if you just want to write and publish a book or don’t have the resources yet to outsource this stuff, my new course will get you up to speed fast and it’s a great value, with hundreds of positive reviews.
The 21 Day Author Platform will help you write a book that sells, and comes with advanced writing tips and a precise book launch roadmap that will help you become a bestselling author fast.

I wanted to thank you for your wonderful books and great advice on self-publishing. Your words make much more sense to me than anything else I have read on the subject. I am feeling substantially more confident now, and I am most grateful for that. Just wanted to make sure that my voice joins the many voices of your admirers. Your work is very important and wonderful in so many ways."
I just wanted to reach out and thank you for all the content that you've put out. I'm right in the middle of finishing up my first two books and will be self-publishing hopefully soon. The amount of mistakes you've saved me from making... thank you is all I can say. People like you are the reason that this is becoming possible to jump into this market and compete!"
I’ve been a writer for a long time. Researching how to sell books online, I have read a lot of material as you can probably imagine. Most of it is pure trash. But, your publishing resources had some meat. These tips are going to come in handy for me and I have no problem giving you a shoutout. Keep that up. I like people like you who actually have something to offer."
I’ve been thinking about writing this post for awhile, but just saw this letter on NYMag’s Dear Polly section from a middle aged author struggling with her declining career, and the response is basically the world’s worst advice to writers. Even worse, it’s exactly what all authors and writers keep repeating and telling each other.

I recently found out about the “War on #amwriting” while researching for a tattoo befitting someone involved in publishing, that announces to the world what I do. I chose this one… it’s pretentious enough to make me self-conscious until I work my ass off and publish a legacy of books It’s great article, bemoaning theRead more
Even though I don’t consider myself an expert at doing online courses, I did pretty well with my first one. So this is an (epic) case study explaining everything I did to make 5-figures with my first course launch – without any affiliates promoting it for me, and without doing any webinars. I hope it will beRead more
“Can you really make a living as a writer?” Last year I decided to put my PhD in Literature to good use and write some novels; specifically, I wanted to see whether I could actually make a living as a writer. The short answer is YES. I made about 35K in six months publishing fictionRead more
Last year we visited the Charles Dickens house in London, which is when we found out there was a movie about the author’s life called The Man Who Invented Christmas. I only watched it recently – it’s available on Amazon Prime – and then I watched it again and took notes. These are tips based onRead more
Recently I got featured on a couple lists of “best self-publishing sites (The Write Life & Feedspot). I thought I’d pay it forward by making my own list of self-publishing companies.
