Pre-orders are a tool, not a strategy. Used correctly, they can amplify your launch. Used incorrectly, they can tank it.
Pre-orders on Amazon work like this: you set up your book page before the release date. Customers can place an order at any time during the pre-order window (up to 90 days for ebooks, and the book just needs to be ready to ship for print). All pre-order sales are credited to day one when the book goes live. This means if you sell 200 copies during a 30-day pre-order window, Amazon treats that as 200 sales on launch day. Your ranking spikes and you get maximum visibility.
That sounds great. But the catch: a pre-order with zero sales is worse than no pre-order at all. An empty pre-order page tells Amazon your book has no demand. When launch day arrives, you are starting from a negative signal instead of a neutral one.
Use pre-orders if:For non-fiction authors with an existing email list, pre-orders are almost always worth it. Send three emails during the pre-order window: one announcement, one reminder, one "last chance." Stack those sales onto launch day and let the algorithm do its work.
Pre-order tactics that actually move the needle:For ebooks, set a pre-order price that is $1-2 lower than your intended launch price. This gives people a reason to order now instead of waiting. On launch day, raise the price to the permanent level. Everyone who pre-ordered gets the discount; everyone after pays full price.
For print, pre-orders work differently. Amazon does not stack print pre-order sales onto day one the same way they do with ebooks. Print pre-orders ship when the book is ready, and the sale registers when it ships. The ebook pre-order stacking effect is the one that really moves your ranking.
For wide authors using Draft2Digital: D2D supports pre-orders to Apple Books, Kobo, and Barnes & Noble. Apple Books is especially pre-order friendly — their editorial team actively curates pre-order pages, and a strong pre-order performance on Apple can get you featured on their "Coming Soon" lists, which is free visibility you cannot buy.
The pre-order deadline warning: On KDP, if you set an ebook pre-order and fail to upload your final file by the deadline, Amazon cancels the pre-order and bans you from setting pre-orders for one year. This is not a gentle reminder — it is a hard penalty. Only set a pre-order if your manuscript is either finished or will be finished well before the deadline. Build in a buffer of at least two weeks.---
