Do I need an ISBN for an Audiobook?

It depends on where you want your audiobook to be available.

For Audible (Amazon's audiobook platform), you do not need an ISBN. Audible uses its own internal identifier system, and most audiobooks sold on Audible do not have ISBNs. If you are only distributing through ACX to Audible, you can skip this.

For everywhere else, you need an ISBN. Spotify, Apple Books, libraries (via OverDrive), and most other audiobook retailers require an ISBN for cataloging. If you are distributing through Findaway Voices, Authors Republic, or D2D Audio, get an ISBN for your audiobook.

Each format of your book needs its own ISBN. Your ebook gets one ISBN, your paperback gets another, your hardcover gets another, and your audiobook gets yet another. They are all the same book, but each format is a distinct "edition" in the ISBN system.

If you have already bought a block of 10 ISBNs from Bowker (which I recommended in Chapter 3), assign one to your audiobook. If you are distributing wide and treating this as a professional publishing business, treating your audiobook as a proper edition with its own ISBN is the right move.

The practical cost is minimal since you already have the ISBNs. The benefit is access to every major audiobook platform and library system. Skip the ISBN only if you are distributing exclusively through Audible and have no plans to go wider.

A common mistake: authors assign the same ISBN to their ebook and print book, or try to use one ISBN across all formats. This will cause metadata conflicts, distribution errors, and confusion in library and bookstore ordering systems. Each format is a distinct product in the supply chain, and each needs its own unique identifier. If this feels like overkill for a single book, think of it differently: you are not buying ISBNs for one book. You are building the infrastructure of a publishing business. Those ISBNs will serve you across every title you publish for years to come.

One more note on ISBNs and audiobooks specifically: if you are producing your audiobook through Findaway Voices, they can provide a free ISBN. However, that ISBN will list Findaway as the publisher of record. If you want consistency across all your formats with your own imprint name, use one of your own ISBNs instead.
