Quick Answer
Self-publishing costs $500–$3,000 total; traditional publishing costs $0 upfront (the publisher pays you). Here’s the full breakdown. (Updated May 2026.)
Publishing a book is a significant endeavor that can vary greatly in cost depending on the path you choose. Whether you go the traditional route or opt for self-publishing, understanding the associated costs is crucial for budgeting and planning.
But let’s be real, the majority of self-publishing companies out there are scammers and vanity presses, so they’ll try to squeeze you for a lot more than necessary.
I’ve broken down all the costs into a more honest and realistic estimate, with a focus on avoiding scams, but in case you’re looking for a ballpark figure of what OTHER people are charging, this article will explore the costs of publishing a book, detailing the services involved, providing examples, and outlining the various publishing processes. It’ll also a list of essential tools and notable publishing companies…. and I’ll leave a running commentary with some feedback.
1. Traditional Publishing vs. Self-Publishing
Traditional Publishing
In traditional publishing, the publisher covers the majority of the costs associated with producing, marketing, and distributing the book. As an author, your main focus is on writing the manuscript. If accepted, the publisher pays you an advance and royalties on book sales. However, this route is competitive, and securing a book deal can be challenging.
Costs:
- Agent Fees: If you choose to work with a literary agent, they typically take 10-15% of your advance and royalties. While this isn’t an out-of-pocket cost, it’s a portion of your earnings.
- Manuscript Editing: While publishers often provide editing, you may choose to hire a freelance editor to polish your manuscript before submission. This can cost anywhere from $500 to $5,000 depending on the editor’s experience and the length of your book.
Self-Publishing
Self-publishing gives you complete control over the publishing process but also means you bear all the costs. These can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on the quality and services you select.
Costs:
- Editing: As with traditional publishing, a good edit is crucial. Costs for developmental editing, copy editing, and proofreading can vary:
- Developmental Editing: $1,000 – $10,000
- Copy Editing: $500 – $3,000
- Proofreading: $300 – $1,500
- Cover Design: A professionally designed cover is essential for attracting readers. Prices range from $300 to $2,000.
- Formatting: Preparing your manuscript for print and eBook formats can cost $50 to $500.
- ISBN: In the U.S., ISBNs cost $125 each, though bulk purchases can reduce the per-ISBN cost.
- Marketing and PR: Effective marketing is crucial for success. This can include book trailers, social media ads, and press releases, costing anywhere from $500 to $5,000 or more.
- Printing: If you choose print-on-demand (POD), the cost is usually around $5 to $15 per book, depending on the size, page count, and format.
- Distribution: Platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and IngramSpark charge for print and distribution. Expect to pay $49 to $79 per book on IngramSpark, plus printing costs.
2. Services Involved in Publishing a Book
1. Manuscript Evaluation and Editing
Before your manuscript is ready for publication, it needs thorough editing. This includes developmental editing (focusing on structure, plot, and character development), copy editing (addressing grammar, style, and consistency), and proofreading (final checks for typos and errors).
- Developmental Editing: $1,000 – $10,000
- Copy Editing: $500 – $3,000
- Proofreading: $300 – $1,500
2. Cover Design and Illustrations
A book cover is the first thing potential readers see, so investing in a professional design is crucial. For illustrated books, additional costs for illustrations should be considered.
- Cover Design: $300 – $2,000
- Illustrations: $500 – $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity and number of illustrations.
3. Interior Formatting
Formatting ensures your book looks professional in both print and digital formats. This involves setting up the layout, font, and spacing.
- Interior Formatting: $50 – $500
- I recommend formatting in MS Word or
- Vellum formatting software
4. ISBN and Barcodes
An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is necessary for selling your book through retailers. Barcodes are also needed for physical books.
- ISBN: $125 per ISBN in the U.S.
- Barcodes: Often included with ISBN purchase or around $25 separately.
- You can get a free ISBN and barcode from KDP publishing.
5. Printing
If you’re producing physical copies, printing costs are significant. Print-on-demand is popular among self-publishers, while offset printing is often used for large print runs.
- Print-on-Demand: $5 – $15 per book
- Offset Printing: Costs vary based on quantity but can start at $1,000 for small runs.
6. Marketing and Promotion
Marketing is vital for book success, covering a wide range of activities from social media campaigns to book tours.
- Social Media Ads: $100 – $1,000+
- Book Trailers: $500 – $3,000
- Press Releases and PR: $500 – $5,000+
But actually… don’t ever do a press release.
Book Trailers are a total waste of time (unless, maybe, you make something awesome with new AI tools), which is something I’ll talk about soon. Don’t pay money for it though.
Social media ads only work if they’re profitable; Facebook and Amazon ads – but only when you have a very tight landing page with a great cover, blurb and enough reviews. For everything else, grab my book marketing guide, or my course 21 day bestselling author platform.
3. Examples of Publishing Costs
- Example 1: Basic Self-Publishing
- Editing: $2,000
- Cover Design: $500
- Formatting: $200
- ISBN: $125
- Print-on-Demand: $1,000 (initial batch)
- Marketing: $1,500
- Total Cost: $5,325
- Example 2: High-End Self-Publishing
- Editing: $7,000
- Cover Design: $1,500
- Illustrations: $3,000
- Formatting: $500
- ISBN: $125
- Offset Printing: $5,000 (initial run)
- Marketing: $10,000
- Total Cost: $27,125
These are rough publishing packages, but don’t agree with ANY publisher that tries to sell me a package including all these things… those are vanity presses. You only really need formatting and cover design; possibly editing. Everything else is a waste unless/until you find your audience and package your book to appeal to them. That’s what I specialize in – the marketing starts later.
