24-Chapter Plot Outline

A comprehensive four-act structure with 24 chapters for novel-length stories

The 24-Chapter Plot Outline is an expanded version of the Plot Dot, developed by Derek Murphy of Creativindie. It provides a complete chapter-by-chapter roadmap for writing commercial fiction, eliminating guesswork about what should happen when.

Unlike traditional three-act structure, this framework uses four distinct acts:

  • Act I: Hero & Ordinary World (Chapters 1-6) — Establish your protagonist, their flaws, and what's wrong with their world
  • Act II: Exploring New World (Chapters 7-12) — Your hero enters unfamiliar territory, makes allies/enemies, and faces trials
  • Act III: Bad Guys Close In (Chapters 13-18) — The antagonist gains ground, allies may be lost, everything falls apart
  • Act IV: Defeat and Victory (Chapters 19-24) — Rock bottom, then the final confrontation and transformation

The structure includes eight key turning points marked in red: Inciting Incident, First Plot Point, First Battle, Midpoint, Second Battle, Second Plot Point, Final Battle, and Rebirth. These are the "tentpole" scenes that hold up your narrative—get these right, and the rest flows naturally.

This outline also tracks two parallel storylines: the A Story (external plot—what happens) and the B Story (internal transformation—how your character changes). Both should progress through each act, culminating in the final battle where external victory requires internal growth.

At roughly 3,500-4,000 words per chapter, this creates an 85,000-95,000 word novel—the sweet spot for most commercial fiction genres including romance, thriller, fantasy, and literary fiction.

  1. ACT I: HERO & ORDINARY WORLD (Chapters 1-6)

    Introduces the protagonist in their ordinary world, establishes their flaws and desires, and builds toward the First Plot Point where they commit to the journey.

  2. 1. Really Bad Day

    Open with your protagonist having a terrible day that reveals their current situation, flaws, and unfulfilled desires. Show what's wrong with their world.

  3. 2. Something Peculiar

    An unusual event or detail catches the protagonist's attention. Something is "off" but they can't quite explain it yet.

  4. 3. Grasping at Straws

    The protagonist tries to fix things using their normal methods, but nothing works. They're getting desperate.

  5. INCITING INCIDENT

    The event that changes everything. The protagonist's world is disrupted in a way that demands a response.

  6. 4. Call to Adventure

    The protagonist is presented with an opportunity or challenge that could change their life. The adventure beckons.

  7. 5. Head in Sand

    The protagonist resists the call. They try to return to normal, deny what's happening, or refuse to engage.

  8. 6. Pull Out Rug

    Something happens that makes staying in the ordinary world impossible. The protagonist's safety net is removed.

  9. FIRST PLOT POINT

    The point of no return. The protagonist commits to the journey—this decision should be active, not passive. Act I ends.

  10. ACT II: EXPLORING NEW WORLD (Chapters 7-12)

    The protagonist enters unfamiliar territory, makes allies and enemies, and faces trials that test their resolve until the Midpoint changes everything.

  11. 7. Enemies & Allies

    The protagonist enters the new world and begins meeting the cast of characters who will help or hinder them.

  12. 8. Games & Trials

    The protagonist faces initial challenges and tests, learning the rules of this new environment.

  13. 9. Earning Respect

    Through small victories, the protagonist begins to prove themselves and gain standing in the new world.

  14. FIRST BATTLE

    A significant confrontation that shows the protagonist what they're really up against. They may win or lose, but they're tested.

  15. 10. Forces of Evil

    The antagonist's power becomes clear. The protagonist sees the scope of what they're facing.

  16. 11. Problem Revealed

    A deeper problem emerges. What the protagonist thought they were fighting is only part of the issue.

  17. 12. Truth & Ultimatum

    Crucial information comes to light. The protagonist faces a hard choice about how to proceed.

  18. MIDPOINT

    A major reversal or revelation that transforms the protagonist from reactive to proactive. Everything changes.

  19. ACT III: BAD GUYS CLOSE IN (Chapters 13-18)

    The protagonist takes action but faces mounting opposition. Things get worse before they get better, building to the second major crisis.

  20. 13. Mirror Stage

    The protagonist reflects on how far they've come and who they're becoming. Internal conflict surfaces.

  21. 14. Plan of Attack

    Armed with new understanding, the protagonist formulates a strategy to defeat the antagonist.

  22. 15. Crucial Role

    The protagonist steps into their role fully, taking responsibility for the mission and their allies.

  23. SECOND BATTLE

    A major confrontation where the protagonist's plan is put to the test. Stakes escalate dramatically.

  24. 16. Direct Conflict

    The protagonist and antagonist clash directly. Lines are drawn, and there's no going back.

  25. 17. Surprise Failure

    Something goes terribly wrong. A betrayal, unexpected obstacle, or fatal flaw undermines the protagonist's progress.

  26. 18. Shocking Revelation

    A truth comes out that changes everything. The protagonist must reassess everything they thought they knew.

  27. SECOND PLOT POINT

    The lowest point. Everything seems lost. The protagonist must find inner strength to continue. Act III ends.

  28. ACT IV: DEFEAT AND VICTORY (Chapters 19-24)

    The protagonist rises from their lowest point, confronts the final challenge, and achieves transformation through the ultimate battle.

  29. 19. Giving Up

    The protagonist hits rock bottom. They may want to quit, and it seems impossible to continue.

  30. 20. Pep Talk

    An ally, memory, or realization gives the protagonist the push they need to try one more time.

  31. 21. Seizing the Sword

    The protagonist commits fully to the final confrontation, armed with everything they've learned.

  32. FINAL BATTLE

    The climactic confrontation with the antagonist. Everything is on the line.

  33. 22. Ultimate Defeat

    The protagonist appears to lose. The antagonist seems to have won. All hope seems lost.

  34. 23. Unexpected Victory

    Through sacrifice, cleverness, or inner transformation, the protagonist snatches victory from defeat.

  35. 24. Bittersweet Return

    The protagonist returns to the ordinary world, transformed. Victory came at a cost, but they've grown.

  36. REBIRTH

    The protagonist's transformation is complete. They're fundamentally changed by their journey, ready for a new chapter of life.

Is the 24-Chapter Plot Outline only for novels?

No. It maps just as cleanly onto screenplays, short stories, memoir and serialised fiction. It describes the shape of a change, not a word count.

Do I have to follow every beat exactly?

No. Treat it as a diagnostic rather than a cage: when a draft sags, find the beat you skipped. Plenty of published books deliberately break the pattern once the writer knows why it works.
