What AI detection actually measures
An AI detector does not recover a document’s history or read the writer’s intent. It compares surface features—word choice, sentence rhythm, repetition, transitions, structure, and predictability—with patterns often found in model-generated prose. This checker first treats the sample as fiction or nonfiction, then returns a plain-language report with a rough likelihood, a short reason, and quotations from the submitted text. The percentage is a stylistic signal. It is not the probability that a machine wrote the passage.
Patterns the checker may notice
Nonfiction can look “AI-ish” when every paragraph has the same shape, transitions are unusually smooth, claims stay abstract, or inflated vocabulary replaces precise language. Fiction has different tells: stacked physical reactions, vague interiority, repeated scene templates, filter words, stock atmosphere, or an unusually high number of em dashes. The tool considers clusters of signals rather than treating one word or punctuation mark as decisive.

Why false positives happen
Human writing and AI writing overlap. Students are often taught formulaic essay structures; business copy favors safe, polished phrasing; fluent non-native writers may use consistent grammar and familiar transitions. All of that can trigger a detector. Short samples provide too little context, while heavy editing can make generated text look less predictable. New models and unusual prompts also create false negatives. Because the target keeps moving, no detector can reliably prove authorship from prose alone.
Sample length matters too. A few sentences rarely contain enough variation for a useful pattern comparison, while a long passage may mix several voices, quotations, or rounds of editing. Genre also changes what normal looks like: a lab report should be regular; a thriller may repeat bodily reactions on purpose. More text can provide context, but it does not turn the estimate into proof.
How to use the report responsibly
Use the output as an editing prompt. Read the quoted examples, decide whether the language is vague or repetitive, and revise only when the suggestion improves the work. Teachers and editors can use it to begin a conversation, alongside drafts, notes, sources, version history, and direct questions about the writer’s process. Never punish, accuse, reject, or grade someone from this score. If a decision affects a person’s education, employment, or reputation, the detector result is not evidence and should not be treated as such.
